Facebook deleted 148 accounts and pages of Bangladesh in 3 months

Online social giant Facebook deleted 50 accounts and 98 pages operated from Bangladesh in the first quarter of this year for spreading fake news. In Bangladesh, they targeted the local audience; these pages were exhibiting untrustworthy behavior.

Meta, the parent company of the social media, reported this information on Friday in the first quarter report of this year. According to Meta's investigative report, these accounts and pages had about 3.4 million followers. Pages and accounts also have multiple platforms including YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Telegram and their own website. Content was usually posted in Bengali from these IDs and pages. However, news and current affairs of Bangladesh were also published in English. Some pages also used BNP's name and posted content criticizing BNP. And to publish them, about 60 dollars in Bangladeshi taka has been spent on advertising.

Meta works with FactWatch, AFP and BOOM Bangladesh to counter rumors. In this regard, the social media is developing their artificial intelligence system. In addition to Bangladesh, Meta also removed six fake campaigns in China, Croatia, Iran, Israel, Moldova and Madagascar.
